Setbacks/Biggest Challenge/Thing I need support for:
I have a two week vacation coming up, half of which is a cruise. While SUPER excited, the last cruise I went on I gained 7 lbs :(
I really don't know how to approach this. Don't worry about it and enjoy the vacation? Try to keep up and deal with the sad when everyone else is eating/tanning while I'm not eating/working out? Try to find the balance in between? Help!
Good goals! I like that they are easy to keep track of, and also attainable. I would guess that it would be fine to exercise on vacation ( you have the whole day to do whatever you want!) You could make it a group thing like feats of strength or a mini tournament so you aren't the only one doing it. Then at least you won't feel like you gave up. I would eat the best possible things I could find and not waste myself on junk! There is still lots of time so most of all have a fun trip!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't think anyone else is interested in being fit on the cruise :( But I will try to find the middle ground somewhere! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI think it should all depend on why you are taking a vacation. Sometimes you just really need to unwind an not feel pressured from the day to day. If that is the case then one week of exercise is not going to be a deal breaker in the grand scheme of things. If you really wanted you could go for a swim or go dancing or do fun things instead of lying on a lounge chair (at least for a little bit). If anything your diet is the think that is really going to affect your weight gain. Food is one of my favourite things about travelling so I don't want to diet while travelling. I only get to spend X amount of days in that place out of the whole year and I would rather get to try that food then regret it. Being that it is a cruise I think it will be more so a drinking thing then a food thing but they two are closely intertwined! I think instead of restricting yourself you should eat what you want but just watch your portions and then just work extra hard when you come back. You should aim to maintain your weight instead of a loss. The other thing that might be an issue for you is all of the high salt in cruise foods, that is often where I find I gain weight but luckily if it is salt it comes off pretty quick. I will say that when I go to Hawaii I end up losing weight because all we eat is tasty fish and I happen to swim a lot of and I do workout for an hour while Steve sleeps in. All and all, have fun because how often are you on a cruise?
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle! I agree the eating/drinking part is going to be a much bigger factor than the exercise part. Food is a BIG reason why we're doing a cruise, it is a great opportunity to try new high-quality things (like duck and lobster!) so it would really suck to give that up for chicken every night. I think maybe ordering what looks good but only eating half might be a good strategy!
DeleteI have been thinking about this since your post. And I think it boils down to this:
ReplyDeleteWhich will make you happier?
1. Eating all you want on your vacay?
2. Restricting yourself but coming home without having backslid?
I guess you could also consider which will make you UNhappier....
1. Restricting yourself while all your people pig out, get drunk, eat all the desserts you soooooo want.
2. The feeling of regret when you get home, the vacation is over, and you have to re-diet some of the weight you have already taken off.
When you decide which option makes you feel the best, then that is what you should do!
Good luck! And I expect trip pictures to accompany your post when you get home. :)
Thanks Krista! You are totally right. It's trying to figure out the answer that is so hard! Every time I go away I start really strong, sure that I would rather come back the same weight than over-indulge. But then when I'm there... all you can eat serve yourself ice cream! I feel like I need a plan going in instead of winging it, but I don't know what the plan should be! Maybe only eat half-sized portions and only 1 dessert a day?
